I'm ambitious and goal focused by nature. Left unchecked these usually positive traits left me burnt out and dissatisfied.
At 25 I had completed a Bachelors with Honours in Civil Engineering, a Master’s in Engineering Management and Pilates Certification. I was trying to work a full time job as a structural engineer in Canterbury while juggling 6-12 group fitness classes a week. I found myself physically and emotionally drained trying to live up to my own unrealistic expectations.
In 2014 I gave myself some time out and went to India to undertake an Astanga Yoga teacher training. My experience in India fundamentally changed my understanding of how I should live my life. I quit my job and spent a year just teaching. I am now back working part time as an engineer part time as a teacher. My time out taught me that genuine success, control, and strength, comes only as a result of a life lived in balance. Yoga can be used strategically to create balance in our lives.
We can do anything, achieve anything we dream of. But balance is key to full life, well lived.
